Chu Hung-lam

Prof. CHU Hung-lam earned his Ph.D. in East Asian Studies from Princeton University. He was a Fellow of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. and a Research Fellow of the Institute of History and Philology at the Academia Sinica in Taipei before returning to teach in Hong Kong. Prior to joining The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as founding Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Chinese Culture, he was Professor and Deputy Chairman of the Department of History and Director of the Center for Confucian Studies in the Research Institute for the Humanities at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prof. Chu is currently Dean of Faculty of Humanities, Director of the Confucius Institute of Hong Kong, Cally Kwong Mei Wan Professor in Culture and Art, and Chair Professor of Chinese Culture at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is also a Chinese Ministry of Education’s Chang Jiang Scholars Chair Professor of Pre-modern Chinese History and a Foundation Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities. By training a sinologist specializing in the history and culture of late imperial China, his areas of research include the intellectual, social and political history of that period, particularly of the Ming, Neo-Confucian classics, and literary collections by Ming authors. He is a recipient of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Vice-Chancellor's Exemplary Teaching Award and of the Prestigious Fellowship Scheme for Humanities and Social Sciences awarded by the Research Grant Council of the University Grants Committee of the Hong Kong SAR.
