Biographical Sketch 簡介
Kathy Mak received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2018. After that, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University’s Mahindra Humanities Center during 2018-19. Her research focuses on the relationship between Chinese art and space by examining what she calls the territorial turn of depicting real and specific locations across different visual media in the mid-twentieth century. Additionally, she is interested in the historiography and methodology of art history, the field of art production, as well as the intersection of art and imagination-memory under the forces of migration and nation-building after the Second World War. Her current book project, The New Look of Mountains and Rivers: Landscape and the Environmental Imagination of Chinese Socialist Spaces (1949-1976), investigates the use of the representation of landscape to reconstruct the public conception of the relationship between humans and the living environments in Mao’s China. In the meantime, she is developing a second project on the connection between art and migration through the angle of remembering and forgetting in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Americas, from the postwar period through the contemporary.
